Hi I'm new to the legacy and to Subaru's in general. I was wondering what is available and where to look for performance stuff for my 96 Leggy L EJ22 with Mass Air Flow? :smt006

I read that particular article when I joined but like the headers-No luck, Intake-No Luck. I did find a short throw on E-bay. Havent thought about cams yet as I wouldnt know how to do it on my Leggy nor know who to take it to. Everything I seem to find is for the 2.5. Are the 2.2's a lost cause? :smt026

The ej22 isn't necessarily a lost cause. It just isn't that well backed by the aftermarket. Basic things like a complete exhaust (headers and all) intakes and pulleys are available through the aftermarket, but if you really want to make an NA ej22 'fast', you're probably going to have to go custom; and even at that, you'll spend a lot of money and might not come out with great results (you'd have a car that would sound like a demon from the deepest depths of hell though  ) These are great engines, they just are not Subaru's choice for performance (that is unanamously the turbo engines). Don't be discouraged though, I'm just negative. Good luck man!!!

Well I'm not looking to build a super car killer though(have a built 82 Z-28 for that) I just want to make it a bit more punchy. I've looked for headers and none of the names in the "So you wanna go fast" thread make em for the EJ22 anymore. Intake I'll make custom, and cams are non exhistant. The clutch I've already discovered is a weak point but I dont know which clutch I need. 24 spline/26 spline? None of the companies listed in that thread make anything for our 2.2 cars.

Here's a set on here. Impreza's can also be used. So you might want to look around.

Abbreviations: EL= Equal Length, UEL= Un-Equal.

Just sharing the love Ken. The more cars that get cammed, the more business you make, the more support you offer. Win-win. :smt006

To utilize more air in and more air out you need cams, intake and at least a cat-back exhaust. I can definitely hook you up with part of it.

intakes,
http://shop.ebay.com/items/_W0QQ_dmptZM ... &_osacat=0

There isn't much available for the earlier exhaust systems. You can however, have a custom set up made at your local exhaust shop.

And of course we have your cams!

Sweet. I do have a few questions though. Ok I've read and understood the whole Seafoam thing. But wouldnt converting over to a full synthectic oil hurt my Scoobie she has 181,000 on her clock and from I recall it could wash the bearings and cause a catastrophic failure. Also what about turbos? Any kits available?

Seafoam is a cleaner that can be used in both the oil and the fuel.

There are a couple guys who have built set ups with turbos. Not real reliable though. The EJ22T is one of the best motors Subaru ever built. Occasionally you can find one wrecked.

For good turbo reliability swapping is the only answer. A stock WRX set up makes decent power and makes it reasonably reliable.

I have a 98 L 2.2 with 250k and I run full synthetic Royal Purple 5w30 winter and 10w30 summer. I'll have prices for you on the stuff you asked about shortly.

Cool, I modified my stock intake tube tonight and added an open element cone with a custom flange, big improvement from about 3-6K. I had an issue prior too that though it got a little better in some ways and worse in other. When I first brought the car home my check engine light popped on and it wouldnt want to idle. Now with my CAI on it it will idle sometimes but still dies every now and then idea's? And which NGK Plugs should I get?

Copper NGK's, on the 2.2 it's easy to change them. You might want to upgrade your grounding points. These cars seem to respond to it since the stock grounding is horrible. You can make your own kit pretty cheap if you piece it together. You could also but a kit from http://www.camotoy.com/products/subaru/index.php

about the headers, make sure you have dual port heads before you go buying something. personally, if i was going to stay ej22, i would just do a DIY turbo set up with a rising rate FPR and have at it.

Have you done a tune up yet? That's the first thing I do when I get a "new" car. Fuel filter, spark plugs, pcv valve, spark plug wires, oil, oil filter at the least.

No never have this will be my first time. I put in a new fuel filter with a moderate improvement, there werent any copper NGK plugs listed so I got the standard $1.99 plugs, cant hurt. I have also decided to Sea Foam it and give it a couple regular oil changes with cheap oil at close intervals to get the gunk out, after a couple of those I should have enough money for the royal purple. Also my car has the single port heads :( no header for me.
