Alright.. so last week.. my car kept making the gas pump click off.. as if the tank was full. However.. it was not. This actually happened on my other LGT that i owned, and i remember it came down to the subaru place telling me it was the 'vent control solenoid'.. or some crap. You can see that thread here (man i was a n00b then):

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthr ... ?t=1050344

SO.. i have that problem again.. now on my new car. I brought it to subaru last week.. and paid them a bunch of money to get it fixed.. among other things. They replaced the fill neck (because mine was getting really badly rusted)..and the lines.. and did a few other things.

However.. i went to go fill up today.. and it still has the same damn problem... except now it threw the code. i KNEW it was going to turn out to be this.. so in reality.. they didnt fix my problem at all.

Anyhow.. I just need some input on this. I did a ton of research on this in the past.. and could NEVER find a section in the FSM that tells you how to replace this valve. I know its somewhere near the charcoal canister, and there is also one on the gas tank.. but I'm not sure the difference between these 2.. and which one it may be.

edit: Also if anyone knows part numbers.. that would be awesome.. as I really want to get this fixed soon so it wont take me 20 minutes to fill my damn tank!

Thanks.

I've had the problem on my 96 Legacy for two years.

I'm certain it's the vent valve, it's located ON the fuel tank.

I remember last time you said you fixed it, and you had a solenoid replaced. You said it was the one by the charcoal canister. There are two solenoids, one is the purge solenoid and one is the pressure control solenoid. The purge solenoid is in the engine bay, i'm certain that's not the one. The other one is by the canister, this is the one you had replaced before. However, I don't think either of these would cause your car to do that because they don't do anything when the car is off!

The vent valve however is in the gas tank and is basically a spring loaded valve which when you are filling gas and the pressure increases inside the tank, once the pressure reaches a certain point it will be enough to overcome the pressure on the spring and open the valve releasing the vapors into the canister.

Your code P1443 means that the purge sensor didn't detect any thing coming through when the ECU told it to purge the canister. I'm not sure how that code relates to you not being able to pump gas though.

You mentioned on you old car you had bought a solenoid to replace it before,

http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/32331/A898B3C1d01.pdf

was it the same solenoid as the one on page 4 of the link above?

I didn't see a page 4 on that pdf you gave me.. however.. what part of the FSM is that? for some reason.. i dont think mine has that section.. either that.. or i'm looking in the wrong place. Where did you find that?

Also... i cant remember what i had bought before.. that was like 3 years ago..

I also never fixed the problem.. i sold the car.. with the part, and the guy after me fixed it. I'm hoping its not the vent valve on the gas tank.. however on my other car, i guess that would explain why they wanted to take my exhaust off. *sigh*.. i really don't have any more money to put into this damn car :/

edit: also.. if you've had the problem for that long.. does your tank also not allow you to fill it quickly? How could you deal with that for so long?

the problem is your tank doesnt vent. so the gas pump see pressure like the tanks full of gas. and just keeps clicking

Sorry, I posted the wrong file

Check out page 4 on this one:
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/32331/A14B2B26d01.pdf

That other link was just from the emissions section of the FSM.

I hate the gas pump thing it's one of my biggest peeves. I don't want to spend that kind of money though to fix it on this car, this is just my beater... But because it's my beater it means it gets the most usage meaning the most gas filling required... it's a real PITA. I'm going to try to replace the PCSV (got one from a junkyard for 20 bucks) as well as take off the filler pipe and make sure nothing is pinched there.

The weird thing is that i disconnected all the hoses from my charcoal canister and drove to the gas station yesterday and I didn't even throw a CEL. I couldn't fill even with the hoses off of the canister so that automatically tells me the blockage isn't at the canister. It's either between the canister and the fuel tank, or the filler and the fuel tank. Makes the most sense if it is the vent valve, OR the hose from the fuel tank to canister is clogged some how.

I'm lost here on how all of this works..

decke48 : you think my best bet would be to replace the valve i'm going to be getting off you? thats the one under / near the charcoal canister correct? I guess I could give it a try.. really hoping this wont be anything to do with the gas tank.. as I'm sure subaru would love to charge me a nice $300 to do that no doubt. *sigh*.

God.. thats horrible. thats not even including the price of the valve either.. which is probably some rip off price of like $200 knowing the way subaru parts go. my god.. i hope its not that valve.. i will be very pissed.

to do the vents on the top of the tank. i just drop the tank enough to get access to the valves. and go through the access covers. and d1giPhux for $5 for both valves, its worth the shot.

Do you mean it can be done without dropping the cross member?

Doesn't sound too bad then.

Are those access holes to the pump underneath the back seat? Do i need to pull the seats?

Cool, i took a look and see what you're talking about.

So is this where the vent valve would be, but further towards the front of the car?
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/32331/tank.JPG

I'm looking at the service manuals and I can't find the vent valve anywhere!

That would be really helpful if you could take a photo for me. The only thing i can see from the service manual are the fuel cut valves, unless that's the same as the vent valve? I'm guessing not since those are accessible without dropping the tank at all..

Ahh okay, the service manuals refer to those as Fuel Cut valves.

Well it looks like i can access those without dropping the fuel tank at all?

you have to drop it some and the room is still tight. but you only have to drop the tank without taking out the diff/support driveshaft just take the lines off under car and drop the straps any should give you some access threw the covers. you should unconnect the rubberhosees to the filler neck also theres not much play in them
